D62-Advanced Buddhism: The Differences between Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism

This advanced course that is only available to full members provides a reading of a preliminary translation of a Dharma Discourse by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III on “The Differences between Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism and the Conferring of an Empowerment” given in 1995 in Taiwan. It is given in response to a question raised by a student who wants to know how to respond to those who say that those who learn Esoteric Buddhism are only mantra-chanters and lack knowledge about what the Buddha taught. The Buddha Master explains the differences in training required by the exoteric and esoteric traditions and that a true student of Esoteric Buddhism must first master the exoteric teachings to be permitted to learn the esoteric. He also explains that while an exoteric master may become a master in one, or at most two, of the classical treatises, an esoteric master learns many more and is able to debate the principles and concepts contained in those commentaries about the sutras. He also talks about the various forms on Inner Tantric Initiations and gives an empowerment to the students present.

It includes assignments, quizzes, supplemental materials, and group discussions. The curriculum videos are the reading by Zhaxi Zhuoma and Reba Jinba Rinpoches of a preliminary translation of this Dharma Discourse taken from videos of Lemonade Sangha classes given on October 3, 5, 12, & 16, 2021. The discussion and Q & A parts of these classes are also available.

Our school offers an introduction to the Practices and Blessings Tradition of Mahayana Buddhism. We offer certain practices that can enable you to become enlightened in this lifetime if followed precisely. This is possible with the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and by our cultivation of morality, meditation, and wisdom. We recognize and praise these holy beings by our chants and develop our wisdom through learning the Dharma. We also recognize that, at present, we only have preliminary translations that may contain errors, but that still offer us guidance on our path
Part of our cultivation is to share any merit we receive with all living beings (not just humans). You will understand these concepts and principles as you study these courses.
It is probably because you did not click the “Completed” button at the end of the task. The other reason is that it may be for “Assignments (essay questions)” that are pending approval by the facilitator. It can be confusing. If you are not getting a response from the facilitator, email them and be sure and include your name and the Course ID and ask to have course graded.
